What does selecting a ups battery base on?

For every business, they always need a good UPS battery back up as so to protect their company's data or other material. Most business owners are aware that they should have a UPS battery back up system. But most business owners put off buying a UPS battery backup system because they don't know which UPS battery backup supplier to use or which UPS battery backup system to buy.

To increase battery lifetime UPS selection based on the following points should be considered:

1. Check Declared Life figure of the UPS battery. Generally you won't be able to get more than 80% of this figure.

2. Check the number of batteries in the UPS. Most three phase UPS systems use 32 to 40 series connected 12V batteries for 400V systems, and about 24 batteries for 208V. Single phase units

may use low voltage batteries charged from a dedicated charger. MTBF of the battery string equals the MTBF of a single battery, divided by number of series connected batteries.

3. Verify whether the UPS has a battery charging current limiting circuit. Most batteries in three phase UPS systems are connected to UPS DC Buss. In such configuration the current, is limited by the UPS rectifier, set to supply load requirements in addition to about 10% for charging. Such systems, unless battery current sensing and limiting circuit exists, provide high charging currents, particularly at low loads, which increase battery heat dissipation elevating grid corrosion process that affects considerably battery lifetime.

4. Verify that the UPS float voltage is temperature compensated. Float voltage should be readjusted (decreased when temperature increases and vice versa) whenever ambient temperature deviates by 5 degrees. Life expectancy of uncompensated batteries, not considering life degradation due to temperature, is reduces by about 10%, when ambient temperature rises from 25°C to 40°C or decreases to 10°C.

5. Verify that ups battery float voltage stability and regulation doesn't exceed +/-1%. One percent increase or decrease from the required voltage setting reduces life expectancy by 10%.

6. Verify that the ripple voltage on battery terminals (or DC on buss if applicable) at full load, doesn't exceed 0.5% RMS of float voltage in floating regime and 1.5% RMS during charging. Ripple voltage causes ripple current increasing internal battery temperature, causing both grid corrosion and dry out damages.

7. Check placement and ventilation of UPS internal batteries. Power components in the UPS as well as the heat dissipated by the batteries should not affect significantly the temperature of the battery bank. Special consideration should be given to batteries located at the hottest or less ventilated places. The health of the total string is always less than any single cell. Hence, a shorted opened or reversed single cell will eventually disable the total battery string.

Anyway, no matter what you will buy, you first make it clear that what you want. Before you buy them, searching some important purchasing tips online or ask your friends who know them well are a good habit. Then you will take a good one home. Everything will be worth its own value you will find later.
