Tips for when you don't want to work

We all have times when we're just not in the mood to get on with work. Perhaps we're feeling tired or apathetic, or weeks of stress have finally caught up with us. Or maybe we're having a hard time staying on task. So how can you get down to your business again?

Give yourself a break

If you're trying to force yourself to work on your small biz at the weekend and you're feeling fed up, then perhaps the best solution will be to simply take a break. You can end up wasting a lot of energy by pushing yourself on by sheer willpower… when, in fact it may be the case that your brain and body really need a break.

Relaxing outdoors on a sunny day

As you relax sprawled out in a lawn chair, the sun warms your skin and a light breeze keeps the temperature comfortable. Birds are chirping merrily in the trees behind you. You are at complete peace with the environment.

Having a good laugh

Laughter is the greatest cure of all. Life is extraordinary in the moments when you are laughing so hard you can barely breathe. These moments of deep laughter are divine in the sense that they cleanse your mood and set your mind on a positive track.

Read a good inspirational book

Reading brings us everything. Choosing a nice book is like talking with the nice people. Sometimes reading will give us great encouragement and urge us to go forward.

Sleeping in on a rainy day

As the rain beats lightly against the window, you nestle your head deeper into your pillow. The sound is soothing and your bed feels like a sanctuary. There is no place you would rather be.

Promise yourself a reward

Finally, if all of these can't motivate you, then try a bribe! Promise yourself a treat if you get through three tasks on your list, or if you finish the last one piece of work which has been hanging over you.

You might decide to take the rest of the day off (which encourages you to work faster rather than procrastinate). You might go to your favorite restaurant for lunch. You could treat yourself to a new book or 7 inch double din car DVD player which you've been meaning to buy. Rewards can be hugely motivating – give it a go.
