Laptops have reached the end of the line in computer technology. The market has been saturated with laptops, tablets and netbooks. But, recent sales figures indicate a new trend in intelligence technology has emerged. Out with laptops in with iPads.
Personal computers were introduced to the public in the early 1970's. Shortly after the PC hit the market, a portable personal computer was envisioned. In 1975 the first commercially available portable PC was manufactured. During the next twenty-five years the portable PC evolved. The early 1990's laptops used less power than previous laptops on the market. The decrease in power permitted the battery life to increase. The laptops could not compete with desktop model computers because of inadequate screen displays. CRTs made way for LED screen technology. By 1991 the laptops sported larger screens with colour displays. The increase in resolution soon followed the colour –integrated large screens. Laptops were now a viable option rather than desktop computers. Printers and hard drives added two more vital components. The early 2000's showed the computer world a laptop that had optical storage and read-only CD-Rom capabilities. A writable CD soon replaced that. The next step for a personal portable computer was a read-only or writable DVD. Blu-Ray optical disc storage was the icing on the cake. It was now apparent a personal portable computer could replace a desktop model.
New devices, such as the ipad, will combine the various technologies available on tablets, netbooks and personal portable computers. Many of the technologies overlap and are on two of the three devices. One device that will incorporate all the current computer capabilities will soon be commonplace.
Laptops have paved the way for new mobile computers. The computers are getting smaller and lighter in weight. A multitouch display rather than a pressure-triggered stylus and a virtual onscreen keyboard control the screen. Some use WI-Fi to access local networks and the, mobile computing is taking the world by storm because of the laptop. Colour screens with clear resolution had to be perfected before a touch-screen display could be developed. The new personal portable computers developers are using previous computer technology as a jumping off point for new technologies. Learning from the past can save time and money.
Today's generation would like the latest technologies available at the lowest cost possible. The sales figures for the iPad device are phenomenal. Consumers are purchasing the latest computer as soon as it hits store shelves. Ipad sales have grown by 136% over the past year. Computer companies, other than the iPad manufacturer, better design something breath taking real soon. The iPad has more than cornered 75% of the mobile computer industry.
It is hard to believe that one company can monopolize the mobile computer market. Computer adversaries have fallen behind the iPad maker. There is hope. Another company promises to have a mobile device available for consumer purchase by the end of 2011. This company will be happy to play second fiddle to the iPad mogul and may give iPad makers a run for their money.
End of the line laptops sounds like a sad country song lyric. In reality, the laptop has played an integral role in the development of mobile computing technology. Future generations will laugh at the size and capabilities of our 2011 laptops. But don't worry they will be laughing at our highlighted striped hair and Capri pants as well. Mobile computers are replacing desktop models and laptops. Homes will no longer have towers surrounding desks or 15-inch monitors. Mobile devices are here and ready for the future.
