A Guide to Flooded Lead Acid Battery

Before we talk about the common usage, firstly we should define what flooded lead acid battery is. Lead Acid Batteries are the eldest of the modern batteries. These batteries were first invented in the late 1800s, and have evolved from the wooden box models of yesteryear to the sleek plastic boxed batteries we purchase today. Based on lead plates, and a sulfuric acid solution, the chemistry has proven over time to be stable, reliable, and fairly safe. VRLA, or valve regulated lead acid batteries, are usually flooded batteries, and the venting is there to handle the generated dangerous explosive gases, hydrogen and oxygen.

Flooded Lead Acid Batteries are standard equipment on many manufacturer boats, yachts, and watercraft. Both AGM and Flooded lead acid batteries are amperage tolerant. AGM and Flooded Lead Acid Batteries are designed to push heavy amperage loads without detrimental effects to the battery. Both AGM and flooded batteries are able to be charged with high output alternators on those motors. These standards and the battery's ability to cope in this environment make either a solid choice over a GEL battery.

Flooded lead acid batteries have been around longest, used the longest in solar and wind electric systems. That's why they are still used in the majority of wind/solar energy systems. The price performance value is because flooded lead acid batteries have the longest life and the least cost per amp-hour of any of the choices. However, they require regular maintenance in the form of watering, equalizing charges and keeping the top and terminals clean.

A flooded lead acid battery is a conventional, unsealed battery that is commonly found in many vehicles. These batteries have caps on the top which can be removed in order to check and replenish the electrolyte level if necessary. Like all batteries, a flooded battery may drain or die from time to time. When this happens, it requires recharging as soon as possible. The longer you allow it to remain discharged, the greater the likelihood for the battery to sulfate, or degrade. Sulfation will eventually ruin the battery. Good maintenance will improve system performance and greatly reduce battery bank replacement costs.
