Lead acid battery problems in the operation of backup power

1. The life of lead acid battery can't meet the design demand.

As a matter of fact, lead acid battery would be serious bad after three years, and few can be used more than five years. That's because consumers don't use those lead acid batteries properly and never maintain it. Plus, they can't find the bad cells timely, so it causes the battery discard as useless.

2. Don't know clearly the operational aspect and performance of lead acid battery.

If there are behindhand cells in the battery pack, you can reduce the differences through a certain depth of discharging and cycle charging. But due to lack of good management and few understanding of internal performance parameters, such as internal resistance and the current surplus capacity, you can not take relative measures because you are unable to know it clearly.

3. As for single cell, the reliability of charging mechanism needs to be perfect.

Since the charging mechanism of domestic DC system is not very perfect, there is voltage drift when in use actually and the lead acid battery was in the floating charge condition in a long time. If the voltage is not the normal value, it will cause the battery over discharge or less charge, which has a big influence on the performance of lead acid batteries.

4. Single cell has an imbalance.

At present, lead acid batteries are consisted of lots of single cells. There are big differences among single cells, such as internal resistance, charging voltage etc, special in the floating charging condition. If there is a behindhand cell that is not full charged and you can't discover and deal with it, it will be worse. Again and again, the imbalance is serious, then cause the behindhand cell out of service. Finally it make the battery pack lose its capacity in advance.

5. Lack of good administering and monitoring.

If there are no administering and monitoring, the lead acid battery maintenance will be weaker, special its operational aspect and performance. A mass of maintenance and administration jobs are required to be done by people and the data needs the professional to clear up and analyze.

6. The end of lead acid battery's life can be known in advance and battery replacement is lack of scientific basis.

We always hope we can foreknown when it is the end of the battery, then we can replace it timely. But now there is no way to clearly know that. In fact, we always judge it is the end of its life when the discharging capacity is lower than the minimum requirement.

How to Maintain and Store Industrial Battery

About industrial battery, I think you have known more because we always need to use it. Here are some maintenance and storage tips for you to refer to.

1. Daily Maintenance

a. Right now charge the industrial battery after every time it discharges.

b. Every discharging can't exceed 80% of the total capacity.

2. Weekly Maintenance

a. Check whether the cable screws among cells is fixed.

b. After charged, it is required to add distilled water if the level is lower than the standard.

c. Check whether there is excess water in the battery box. If it is found, it must be immediately sucked dry.

3. Monthly Maintenance

a. Before charging is over, check all the industrial battery voltage and log it.

b. After that, test each cell's electrolyte density and temperature and log it. If the value is very different from before, you should ask the professional for help.

4. Yearly Maintenance

a. Industrial batteries' insulation resistance should be checked by the professional. The specified value is 50 Ohms/V. For the whole battery (whose voltage is up to 220V), its resistance is at least 1000 ohms.

b. Check the charger according to the user's manual to ensure its functions normal operation.

5. General instructions

a. Keep industrial battery clean and dry to avoid crawling current.

b. If there is some liquid found in the battery box, they must immediately be sucked dry.

c. If the paint in and out is broken, it should be repaired right now to ensure the box insulation and protect it from corrosion.

d. If you find the cell needs to be replaced, it should be done by the professional.

6. Storage

a. Industrial battery should be stored in dry place.

b. If you want industrial batteries can be used at any time, you should deal with as following: Give it a compensation charging every month and the charging voltage must be 2.23V each cell; Pay attention to not store it for a long time, or it will shorten its service life.

The above tips are some maintenance about industrial lead acid battery. They look very simple. Yes, it really is, but it is still useful.

Each Component of VRLA Battery Construction Affects its Life

Have you ever heard of VRLA battery? Do you know its construction? I think if you are not professional, it's hard to understand it. It doesn't matter. I will talk about it in detail and you can first know some general knowledge. Each component of battery construction is very important for its life and capacity.

There are some factors affecting the VRLA battery performance. In fact, they are also the components of VRLA battery.

1. Battery construction. The VRLA battery is consisted of positive and negative plates, AGM membrane, bus bar between positive and negative, electrolyte, safety valve, cover and shell. These components are very important for its life and capacity.

2. Grid Alloy. VRLA battery adopts Pb-Ca alloy as negative plate, while positive plate uses Pb-Ca, Pb-Sb and pure Pb etc. The Pb-Ca, Pb-Sb affects its cycle life. It is better to choose low antimony alloy battery in these areas where often has power interruption because its reliability is very good.

3. Thickness of Grid. The designed life depends on the thickness of positive plates.

4. Safety Valve. It is a critical component.

5. AGM membrane. It directly affects the VRLA battery life and uniformity of capacity.

6. Material. The material of VRLA battery's cover and shell includes PP, ABS, and PVC. Among them, PP is the best.

7. Electrolyte. It's required to log the data of adding acid. We should ensure that the reaction can meet the quality demand.

8. Coated Board Craft. It's to ensure the plates thickness and each active material's uniformity.

9. Sealed technology. The VRLA battery sealed technology includes batteries covered in sealant, a sealed column, battery cover with water permeability, and safety valve sealing.

10. Efficiency of oxygen compound. AGM battery includes good oxygen compound efficiency. According to relevant standard test, it is more than 98%. Hence, it comes with good maintenance performance.

The following factors can affect the VRLA battery's performance. They are also a part of VRLA battery and indispensable for its battery construction. If you are luck to visit a VRLA battery manufacturer, I think you will see these components clearly and easily understand its reaction.

More useful knowledge will be written here. Hope you can get the useful information that you need. Welcome to visit again.

Take Care of Your Li-On Battery

Lithium-Ion batteries have a finite life; they slowly degrade from the day they are first made. The life of the battery will depend upon how you charge and discharge the battery and the temperature at which the battery is kept. A manufacturer will rate a Notebook battery to the point where it holds 50% of its original capacity. At this point you should consider replacing the battery.

The energy is stored in these batteries through the movement of lithium ions. Lithium is the third lightest element, giving a substantial saving in weight compared to batteries using much heavier metals. However, the bulk of the electrodes are effectively "housing" for the ions and add weight, and in addition "dead weight" from the electrolyte, current collectors, casing, electronics and conductivity additives reduce the charge per unit mass to little more than that of other rechargeable batteries. The forte of the Li-ion chemistry is the high open circuit voltage in comparison to aqueous batteries (such as lead acid, nickel metal hybride and nickel cadmium).

Transport lithium batteries with care. Because of the potential for short circuit and rapid discharge causing explosion, the air transportation of lithium batteries is strictly regulated. Any battery not installed in an electronic device may not be transported in either checked or carry-on luggage.

Remember that the battery half-lifeis rated for a certain total number of charge/discharge cycles (see your User Manual or Quick Start Guide for the rating). For example, a battery that is rated for 3 hours and 500 charge/discharge cycles will still be considered as within specification, even if it only lasts for 1 hour 45 minutes after 500 charge/discharge cycles.

Always ensure the battery is recharged as soon as possible after it becomes fully discharged. A battery will be permanently damaged if left for an extended length of time in a fully discharged state.

Heat is the worst enemy of a battery. Allow plenty of air to circulate around the Notebook/Tablet PC, so that the battery is kept as cool as possible when charging and also when in use. If provided, use the integrated 'legs' under the Notebook to raise the notebook and improve air circulation.

Do Not - Expose the battery to excessive heat or cold (i.e. outside the range of 10-35 degrees Centigrade ambient).

Do Not - Store the battery in a fully charged state (store batteries with about 50% charge).

Do Not - Allow a nearly flat battery to be unused for more than a month or so. The battery will slowly discharge until it becomes fully discharged and this will permanently damage the battery cells.

How to get more Battery Time from your Digital Camera Battery

When it comes to power consumption not all digital camera features are equal. Some of the digital camera greatest features are high energy consumers. By knowing which features consume the most energy you will be able to avoid or minimize using those features save energy and get more life time from your batteries?

Turn off the LCD and use the viewfinder: Use the optical viewfinder instead of the LCD for composing your photos. Using the camera menus disable the LCD by turning it off. Since the LCD consumes a lot of energy every time you are using it to take a photo or to look at your objects and compose a photo you are wasting energy. Only use the LCD when you must for example when taking an overhead photo when the optical viewfinder is not usable.

Do not use continuous focus when not necessary: Every time your camera focuses it consumer's energy. The motors that move the optical components in order to focus consume a lot of energy. You can not avoid focusing of course but you can avoid focusing that is not necessary. For example your digital camera can be set to continuous or single focus. For moving objects such as in sport events continuous focus is used so your can stay focused on the object until you are ready to take the photo. In those cases as long as you press the shutter button half way down the camera will continue to focusing on the object. To save energy minimize that time to the minimum necessary. For example if you plan to shoot a photo of a runner at point A only presses the shutter when he gets close to that point. Holding the shutter button down and following the runner for a longer time than needed to capture him at point A wastes a lot of energy .

Carry another battery: Two batteries have twice the energy as one. Carry an extra battery if you are planning for a long shooting session or if you are not sure how many photos you will shoot and how long you will be away from your charger. Some photographers always carry an extra battery with them - batteries are very small and light and carrying an extra one is really not a burden. One thing to remember when carrying an extra battery is to always make sure that you are carrying an extra battery that is fully charged there is no use in carrying an empty battery. Batteries tend to lose their charge even if they are not used so if you are carrying an extra battery for a few days or more remember to recharge it even if you did not use it.

How to Prolong the Life of Your Power Tool Batteries

How to stop buying expensive batteries so often how to extend the life of your power tool battery Works for all rechargeable batteries.(9 volt, 12 volt, 18 volt, 19.5 volt, and higher.)

While power tool batteries can be recharged and used over and over again, they also have a set lifespan and can only last up to a number of discharges and recharges. However, there are some methods that you can try in order to make the battery's life last longer allowing you to get more for your money.

Buy batteries that are fresh. Do this by going to a store with a high battery turnover such as a busy toy store or electronics department. Choose from the center of the rack, as store employees are taught to put new merchandise in the very front or back of the displays.

Do you feel better when you are in a controlled environment? Your power equipment batteries do too. Remove the batteries from the power equipment. You should store the power tool in the climate controlled area also. They perform better at room temperature.

While most stationary tools are powered by electric motors or compressed air, portable and smaller tools usually make use of batteries. Because it relies on batteries to work, your tool is only as good as the life of your battery. Once your battery is dead, your power tool is rendered useless until you end up replacing it. Naturally, since these tools make use of rechargeable NiCad (nickel cadmium) batteries, then the lifespan of the battery is substantially longer than the conventional ones. But, these rechargeable batteries also have their own life spans, and will need to be replaced at a certain point in time.

Place the batteries in a environmentally controlled area (example a closet). Batteries will last in most situations twice as long as leaving them in a cool, hot, cold or damp garage or vehicle.

Take batteries out of items that rarely get used. Put them in a zippered plastic bag. You can tape the bag to the item if possible or you can store them elsewhere, away from heat and light. Don't let them touch anything metal as they can lose power.

Don't mix old and new batteries when you use them. The new ones will be stronger and can cause the older ones to leak battery acid. Battery acid is extremely caustic and will cause burns on your skin and anything else it touches. Wear gloves and use caution when removing leaking batteries. Make sure to dispose of batteries properly.

What is mAh in Digital Camera Batteries?

Most battery life spans are rated based on mAh (milliamp hours). Certain brands, such as Sony, use different protocols to rate the predicted life time of their batteries. In some cases, no life span is rated at all. In such cases, mathematical equations can be used to convert between the various electrical components -- such as current, resistance and voltage -- to come up with the actual lifespan of the battery. Most batteries will print some combination of the voltage, amperage, and wattage of the battery.

Digital cameras normally come with a built in Li-ion or Lithium ion battery similar to the one found in mobile phones, laptops, PDAs and iPods. This is the popular square flat type that requires recharging for continuous use. The gadget itself comes with a charger upon purchase and all you need is to connect the cord to the camera and then plug it into an electrical outlet to start the battery charging process.

Each digital camera battery has a rating and this is known as a mAh or Milliamp Hour. The mAh refers to the power a certain battery is capable of holding which means that a battery with higher mAh values should last longer without having the need to recharge it.

If you don't wish to use the AA alkaline digital camera batteries, what you can do is buy another battery of a similar type to the one that comes with your camera or the Li-ion battery. This will be a good idea especially if you're the type of person who loves taking photos wherever you go. At least when you have an extra battery on standby, you won't miss those important shots.

There are many online shops that cater exclusively to digital camera batteries compatible with most brands. If you're patient enough to look for legitimate online retailers, you will surely find one that offers batteries with identical quality and capacity as to the original ones you're using.

Also when using your Lithium-ion battery, experts recommend that consumers not totally drain it below its minimum voltage of 2.4 to 2.8 volts/cell before recharging. In other words, you don't need to completely discharge the battery before recharging. Another advantage is that this type of battery is capable of being recharged hundreds of times. But keep in mind that not using it for a long time will actually shorten its life to only two to three years.

Write down the number of watt hours and volts listed on the battery. It is useful to write "Wh =" then the number of watt hours then "V =" and the number of volts. This will help keep the notes clear.

A Guide to Flooded Lead Acid Battery

Before we talk about the common usage, firstly we should define what flooded lead acid battery is. Lead Acid Batteries are the eldest of the modern batteries. These batteries were first invented in the late 1800s, and have evolved from the wooden box models of yesteryear to the sleek plastic boxed batteries we purchase today. Based on lead plates, and a sulfuric acid solution, the chemistry has proven over time to be stable, reliable, and fairly safe. VRLA, or valve regulated lead acid batteries, are usually flooded batteries, and the venting is there to handle the generated dangerous explosive gases, hydrogen and oxygen.

Flooded Lead Acid Batteries are standard equipment on many manufacturer boats, yachts, and watercraft. Both AGM and Flooded lead acid batteries are amperage tolerant. AGM and Flooded Lead Acid Batteries are designed to push heavy amperage loads without detrimental effects to the battery. Both AGM and flooded batteries are able to be charged with high output alternators on those motors. These standards and the battery's ability to cope in this environment make either a solid choice over a GEL battery.

Flooded lead acid batteries have been around longest, used the longest in solar and wind electric systems. That's why they are still used in the majority of wind/solar energy systems. The price performance value is because flooded lead acid batteries have the longest life and the least cost per amp-hour of any of the choices. However, they require regular maintenance in the form of watering, equalizing charges and keeping the top and terminals clean.

A flooded lead acid battery is a conventional, unsealed battery that is commonly found in many vehicles. These batteries have caps on the top which can be removed in order to check and replenish the electrolyte level if necessary. Like all batteries, a flooded battery may drain or die from time to time. When this happens, it requires recharging as soon as possible. The longer you allow it to remain discharged, the greater the likelihood for the battery to sulfate, or degrade. Sulfation will eventually ruin the battery. Good maintenance will improve system performance and greatly reduce battery bank replacement costs.

Maximize Your Laptop Battery

If you take the time to make a few adjustments to your laptop, while keeping battery conservation at the forefront of your mind, you can effectively extend the power of the battery's life and, until you can plug in your computer, avoid losing the use of it.

Click on low-power settings, such as "sleep," "standby" or "suspend" when you close your computer, but don't want to completely shut it down. This works two-fold. It gives you the opportunity to resume your work quickly while saving power. "Hibernate" uses less power than "sleep." It shuts your computer down and saves everything to the hard drive. When you resume power, your desktop is exactly as you left it, saving you time.

Remove any USB devices or PC cards you don't need to conserve battery power. If your computer uses a wireless card, remove it when you don't need the connection. Disable any devices, via your computer's device manager, that you aren't using, such as your modem, network card or DVD/CD-ROM drive.

Dim the screen on your laptop. Check the keyboard for function keys that will allow you to do so, or consult your user's manual. A dim screen uses less battery power than a bright one. Set your computer screen to go blank after a certain period of time, such as five minutes of inactivity. If you are interrupted while working for longer than the period of time you select, the blank screen will appear and save power.

Prioritise your work; if you don't have to multi task don't. Consider switching off the autosave functions in MS Word or other applications. They are great but as they keep saving at regular intervals, they make your hard disk work harder, eating up battery power. That said, we should add a word of warning: when your battery is low switch autosave back on so you don't lose work if the computer unexpectedly switches off when the battery goes flat.

Unplug unnecessary devices such as additional speakers, or things like DVD and hard disks that take power via USB from the laptop. Consider changing your screen resolution and brightness. The brighter the screen appears, the more electricity it is consuming. Work from your hard disk rather than the CD or DVD drive. On some laptops, you can even remove the optical drive.

In this feature we'll give you hints and tips on how you can prolong the running time of your notebook's battery. On many netbooks, there may be fewer options to tweak, but you can still follow our tips to make your battery last longer.

Replacing the Lithium Ion Battery

Lithium-ion batteries are quite common to be used as laptop battery. They are one of the most popular types of rechargeable battery for portable gadget, like laptop with one of the best energy densities, no memory effect, and a slow loss of charge when not in use. Beyond consumer electronics, the lithium-ion battery is also growing in popularity for military, electric vehicle, and aerospace applications. Now with the research on traditional lithium-ion battery technology, it has made great progress on durability, energy density, intrinsic safety. However, its cost is still high.

Laptop lithium-ion batteries, like all rechargeable battery packs, lose their charging capacity over time. Because new laptop batteries are quite expensive, especially for Inspiron 1526 Battery and replacing the individual cells inside the battery casing can save a lot of money. However, rebuilding a battery sometimes does not work as expected, so it's important to be willing to purchase a new laptop battery if the procedure fails. If you are interested in it, you can see the instruction below for your reference.

Once get it, do carefully remove each cell using a craft knife and wire cutters as necessary. Each battery pack is different, but the cells are usually wrapped in a plastic casing with metal contacts attached to one end. Lay the metal contacts, wires and casing material aside. And then use double-sided tape or a solder gun (only if necessary) to attach the metal contacts to the cells and circuit board. When finished, the old cells should be completely stripped (naked) and the new cells should look like the old ones as much as possible. Finally, just place the new cells inside the case, referring to your diagram or photos if necessary. Glue the battery pack top back on. Charge the new battery for at least 24 hours before using it.

At last, do notice that keep an eye on the new battery while it charges for the first time. If the contacts are not connected properly, the battery could overheat and cause damage to the laptop.

One thing that can cause that whole problem to be avoided is to keep spare laptop batteries. This allows one to be charged while the other is being used. This makes it an excellent alternative for people who are going on long trips, or are going to be in long meetings and won't be able to charge their battery. It just takes a moment to change out one battery for the other and the laptop is ready to go for another few hours.

Another benefit of the lithium-ion Toshiba laptop battery is that it doesn't have any memory. This refers to an effect that many rechargeable batteries have. Each time they are charged and drained, they "remember" how far that charging goes, and how far down they are drained. If the battery doesn't get fully drained every time it gets used, it starts charging only to that level. For example, if it only gets drained 90% each time it gets used, after some time it only charges to 90%. Eventually, the effective use life of the battery gets down to the point that it can't be used without being constantly hooked into a charger but li-ion laptop batteries don't have that problem. They do not need to be fully drained to be recharged and they will always empty and charge to their full extent.

Enhanced Performance Digital Camera Battery

They have highly advanced technology that makes them extremely useful aid to the camera. These can be attached to the camera and other accessories via readily available adaptors and cables. The high end batteries can be used to support more than one device at a time with the help of its adjustable and flexible outputs that are compatible with all the devices. The batteries are created with great care and efficacy so that they offer long lasting services with impeccable performance.

They offer amazing power supply that can be used to operate the digital cameras. Generally people demand a single battery that fits most of the camera; it is desirable to seek such batteries since these type of batteries can be used with a number of cameras. The batteries are sturdy and sleek. They generally have anodized aluminum casing and etched front and back panel in stainless steel. The people who often use a digital camera realize that the life of the battery depends upon the make and the features of the camera. Every camera has special icon that depicts the status of the battery charge. One should always charge the battery to fullest capacity and also keep an extra battery as a precaution. It is extremely frustrating if the camera runs out of battery while you are capturing the beautiful moments of your life in a photograph or a video. High quality digital camera battery should be purchased so that enhanced performance can be achieved.

Due care should be taken while selecting the batteries for your camera. It is sensible to use similar brands and compatible products. If we try to mix and match the battery and the camera then we cannot get the maximum efficiency and performance from our devices. The batteries should be removed from the gadget if it is not being used. If the battery is attached to the camera while it's being used, digital camera battery can wear out and get damaged.

The greatest source of power drain on a digital camera is the LCD screen. To prolong battery life, digital cameras often allow a user to disable image review features so that this element is used as little as possible. With the LCD screen disabled, it is possible to take up to five times more photos before replacing or recharging your batteries.

It is always important to remove disposable alkaline batteries before storing a device for a prolonged period to reduce the chance of leakage. Lithium, NiCD and NiMH cells no not suffer from this problem, but these too should always be safely disposed of or recycled.

If the camera uses AAA batteries, a wise investment is rechargeable batteries. Newer Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries are best. They are less prone to the so-called "memory effect" of older Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) batteries. And they last longer per charge than throwaway alkaline batteries. Just make sure to get quality rechargeable batteries rated 1600 mAh or higher. They cost a little more but are well worth it in the long run. Also buy a good charger and at least one extra set of batteries.

Battery Performance

This is important as some products need an exceptionally charged battery for the products to work. An example of this is that of car batteries. You will need to have your car battery working in fine condition if you are expecting to get anywhere. To help you see if the battery is working in top condition you can buy a tool that allows you to gauge the strength of the battery.

These tools are also excellent if you need to see if a certain battery will work with other appliances. There are other needs that you can also use. These are battery testers. These items are also good for judging the battery performance too as they will show you in terms of numbers just how a battery works well. You will have to do some research in order to find the best device which will show you the battery performance.

When you look at these differences it should become clear which ones are better. You will also get to see what other features these tools have. When you are thinking about buying a tool which will allow you to test the battery performance it is best if you do some shopping first. As there are many different batteries that you can look at, it is best if you have an idea about the functions you will need in a battery tester. As with many of the products which are in the market today you will need to choose the one that will provide you with accurate information. You will need to make sure that no matter what tester you are looking into buying, you will be able to read the information which is provided about the battery performance. While having a tester can make life easier, it is best if you have the necessary implements close at hand.

This will make judging of the battery performance an easy task. Additionally with the knowledge which is given about battery performance you will know when the time arrives to replace your battery.

Temperatures well below freezing slow a battery's chemistry and lower it's current. At temperatures over 100 degrees, a battery will self-discharge at a faster rate. If it's left unused for several days at this temperature, it will have less charge.

Batteries for cars and trucks are designed to put out a lot of current for a short period of time. Running a car battery to under 20 percent of its capacity ruins it. Marine and golf cart batteries, called deep-cycle batteries, supply less instant current but can be discharged more deeply.

What does selecting a ups battery base on?

For every business, they always need a good UPS battery back up as so to protect their company's data or other material. Most business owners are aware that they should have a UPS battery back up system. But most business owners put off buying a UPS battery backup system because they don't know which UPS battery backup supplier to use or which UPS battery backup system to buy.

To increase battery lifetime UPS selection based on the following points should be considered:

1. Check Declared Life figure of the UPS battery. Generally you won't be able to get more than 80% of this figure.

2. Check the number of batteries in the UPS. Most three phase UPS systems use 32 to 40 series connected 12V batteries for 400V systems, and about 24 batteries for 208V. Single phase units

may use low voltage batteries charged from a dedicated charger. MTBF of the battery string equals the MTBF of a single battery, divided by number of series connected batteries.

3. Verify whether the UPS has a battery charging current limiting circuit. Most batteries in three phase UPS systems are connected to UPS DC Buss. In such configuration the current, is limited by the UPS rectifier, set to supply load requirements in addition to about 10% for charging. Such systems, unless battery current sensing and limiting circuit exists, provide high charging currents, particularly at low loads, which increase battery heat dissipation elevating grid corrosion process that affects considerably battery lifetime.

4. Verify that the UPS float voltage is temperature compensated. Float voltage should be readjusted (decreased when temperature increases and vice versa) whenever ambient temperature deviates by 5 degrees. Life expectancy of uncompensated batteries, not considering life degradation due to temperature, is reduces by about 10%, when ambient temperature rises from 25°C to 40°C or decreases to 10°C.

5. Verify that ups battery float voltage stability and regulation doesn't exceed +/-1%. One percent increase or decrease from the required voltage setting reduces life expectancy by 10%.

6. Verify that the ripple voltage on battery terminals (or DC on buss if applicable) at full load, doesn't exceed 0.5% RMS of float voltage in floating regime and 1.5% RMS during charging. Ripple voltage causes ripple current increasing internal battery temperature, causing both grid corrosion and dry out damages.

7. Check placement and ventilation of UPS internal batteries. Power components in the UPS as well as the heat dissipated by the batteries should not affect significantly the temperature of the battery bank. Special consideration should be given to batteries located at the hottest or less ventilated places. The health of the total string is always less than any single cell. Hence, a shorted opened or reversed single cell will eventually disable the total battery string.

Anyway, no matter what you will buy, you first make it clear that what you want. Before you buy them, searching some important purchasing tips online or ask your friends who know them well are a good habit. Then you will take a good one home. Everything will be worth its own value you will find later.

Advantages of Rechargeable Batteries

Many of the electronic portable devices we use require batteries. This includes items such as remote controls, toys, and cellular phones. Devices such as lap tops and cellular phones require the use of rechargeable ones; however, there are many other electronic items that use batteries but give you the option of using either rechargeable or disposable. At this point, you have a decision to make and there are advantages to choosing rechargeable batteries over disposable ones.

Rechargeable batteries are more convenient than disposable ones. If your batteries run out of charge, and you have rechargeable ones, instead of having to run out to the store, you just need to use the charger. Though you may have to wait around while they charge and not be able to use the electronic device, you don't have to make a trip to the store. One way to avoid having to wait for them to charge is keeping some available that are charged, just in case.

When first purchasing rechargeable ones, the original cost is slightly expensive because along with purchasing the batteries themselves, you will also need to purchase a charger. It is beneficial to purchase a decent charge because they guarantee an extended battery life, and will save you money in the long run. While disposables may initially seem to be the less expensive way to go, rechargeable ones are actually less costly long term. This is because they can be charged repeatedly, whereas disposable ones need to be tossed out. This will save you hundreds of dollars each year.

Another advantage of using rechargeable batteries instead of using disposable ones is that the rechargeable ones are more environmentally friendly. Although neither of the batteries can be tossed in the garbage because the components that make up the batteries are not only toxic, but may cause fires in the landfill if they are not handled properly, but rechargeable ones produce far less waste than the disposable ones. This is what makes them environmentally friendly. If you want to be more environmentally conscious, be sure to purchase nickel-metal hydride because the nickel-cadmium ones are made with toxic substances.

When deciding on whether to purchase disposable or rechargeable batteries, the latter is the way to go because they end up saving you money in the long run, are more convenient, and are more environmentally friendly than the disposable ones. These are some of the main advantages of purchasing rechargeable batteries.

Lead Acid Battery Over-Discharging Preventive Measures

It is not able to completely avoid the self discharge of lead acid battery, but we can take some preventive measures to prevent the battery from over discharge, and make the discharge rate in the normal range. There are eight common preventive measures as following:

1. Often keep the lead acid battery plate clean.

2. Note that the connection between the wire and clip should be fastness, and don't occur the looseness and short-circuit etc phenomenon.

3. Keep the electrolyte with appropriate density. At other times, you should add the distilled water, and don't use other water that includes mineral substance. When liquid level is low, you should add distilled water in time, in case that the density of electrolyte increases for lack of water.

4. Don't continually start the engine for long time. The time of starting doesn't exceed 5 seconds every time. The spacing interval of twice starting should be more than 2 minutes. This will avoid the lead acid battery over discharge because of the large current, which makes the distilled water of electrolyte generate a large evaporation, and then it will burn the plates for the too large electrolyte density. The ventilated holes of lead acid battery cover should be unblocked.

5. Proper store the battery that is not in use. In the summer, it can be put in the room with good ventilation, dry, nice and cool, far away from the chemistry items. Do charge it every month to make the electrolyte density equality, and the liquid level not low.

6. Prevent the sewage from entering the inside of lead acid battery from the cover or air vent when washing the battery.

7. In time recondition or replace the plates when it is damaged.

8. Get rid of the rest of liquid when changing the electrolyte of lead acid battery.

How to Rejuvenate a GEL Battery

The name "gel cell" refers to the fact that this gel battery uses a gelled electrolyte rather than a liquid one. It is a type of SLA or sealed lead acid battery. In true Gel cells, the sulphuric acid electrolyte is thickened (gelled) to allow the battery to work in all positions. Unfortunately this electrolyte thickening decreases the mobility of the ions which results in increased internal resistance. There are other differences resulting from gelling, the most significant detriment is that the electrolyte can not be removed. Washing out of the cells to help rejuvenate the battery in true gel cells are just not possible. Sealed lead acid batteries also cost much more then ordinary wet cell types. Presently the very common seven Ampere hours sealed cell battery cost more than twice as much as a new garden tractor battery which has three time the AHr's capacity.

Almost all smaller (up to about 1000VA) UPS, used by many personal computer users are outfitted with these sealed type batteries. Smaller UPS uses one, larger ones use two or more. The UPS continually "float" charge its batteries. Typical float charge for the seven AHr batteries is around 50+-mA. Most UPS supplies continuously charge the internal sealed cell battery, as long as the UPS unit is plugged into a working wall outlet. The float charger is applied even when the power switch is in the "off" position. As a result of this charging the internal battery will be fully ready for any forthcoming emergency. It is precisely what is required to keep the battery's cells from sulfation, a nonreversible serious degradation. Reconverting these lead sulphate crystals are not easy even in conventional lead acid batteries. It is easier to rejuvenate gel cells then to attempt to desulphate them.

When the battery reaches full charge, the continued flow of current disassociate the water in the electrolyte into its gaseous components-hydrogen and oxygen. In the course of a short few years, this nonstop charging action results in completely dehydrated, dried up cells. UPS manuals advise users to frequently test their units. Occasionally, on more expensive power supplies, a test button is provided for this purpose. As water loss and the battery's internal resistance gradually increases, its Ampere hour capacity steadily decreases. This loss is apparent in shorter and shorter backup times. Since backup batteries are "sealed" units, replace them may be the only apparent remedy. Then the same cycle repeats again. Usually the life time of a sealed battery in UPS service is between two to four years. Precisely, because of the high replacement cost, and to protect our overburdened fragile environment, it is most advantages to extend life of those batteries as much as possible. A small time spends on maintenance pays good dividends, not only in cost avoidance, but improved emergency readiness as well. Revitalization of these sealed cells is best done, as preventive maintenance, before they are complete dry up.

Life Expectancy of VRLA Battery

Valve regulated lead acid battery (VRLA battery) utilizes a dilute sulfuric acid electrolyte which is immobilized so as to eliminate the hazards of spills and leakage and which facilitates an oxygen recombination cycle. The oxygen combination cycle eliminates the need to add water throughout the battery's life and improves its safety of operation. VRLA battery doesn't require regular addition of water to the cells, just different from the general lead acid battery. However, how long does the VRLA battery last for? The purpose of this article is to review the life expectancy of VRLA batteries.

The majority of VRLA batteries used in Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) applications have a five year design life. This design life is the basis for the manufacturer's pro-rated warranties.

The service life of a battery is the actual time span from the date of installation until the battery capacity drops below 80% of its rating. VRLA batteries that are well maintained and are installed in a properly conditioned environment, typically have a service life = 70%-80% of their design life.

Factors that adversely affect the life expectancy of a VRLA battery include:

  1. a.      High Ambient Temperatures:

The optimum temperature for a VRLA battery, upon which most manufacturers' warranties are based, is 77℉(25℃). For a battery maintained at constant charge, there is a 50% reduction in life expectancy for every 15℉ increase in ambient temperature above 77℉. The batteries must also be installed with the proper spacing per the manufacturers' recommendations in order to maintain the necessary ventilation.

  1. b.      Discharge Cycles:

VRLA batteries are rated for a certain number of deep discharges and shallow discharges. The load during discharge, length of discharge, rate of discharge, rate of recharge and recharge time all factor into the affect on life expectancy. Manufacturers rarely publish specific data on the number of discharges for which a battery is rated; however, VRLA batteries are typically designed for 2-3 deep discharges per year and several hundred shallow discharges per year.

  1. c.      Charging Characteristics

VRLA battery in UPS applications should be maintained at a float voltage that does not exceed the maximum set by the battery manufacturer. Overcharging the batteries will cause degradation and eventual failure. Constant overcharging can lead to Thermal Runaway, in which a continuous cycle of rising temperature and rising current result in venting of gases and a possible rupture of the case. If hydrogen gases are allowed to escape in a large enough concentration, a source of ignition could cause a fire.

Key Influence of Lead Acid Battery

Most lead acid batteries are constructed with the positive electrode (the anode) made form a lead-antimony alloy with lead oxide pressed into it, although batteries designed for maximum life use a lead-calcium alloy. The negative electrode (the cathode) is made from pure lead and both electrodes are immersed in sulphuric acid.

When the battery is discharged water is produced, diluting the acid and reducing its specific gravity. On charging sulphuric acid is produced and the specific gravity of the electrolyte increases. The specific gravity can be measured using a hydrometer and will have a value of about 1.250 for a charged cell and 1.17 for a discharged cell, although these values will vary depending on the make of battery. The specific gravity also depends on the battery temperature and the above values or for battery at 15℃。

If lead acid batteries are over discharged or left standing in the discharged state for prolonged periods hardened lead sulphate coats the electrodes and will not be removed during recharging. Such build-ups reduce the efficiency and life of batteries. Over charging can cause electrolyte to escape as gases.

The capacity of lead acid battery is very dependent on the temperature at which the battery is operating. The capacity is normally quoted for a temperature of 25℃, however, the capacity will reduce by about 50% at -25℃ and will increase to about 10% at 45℃。Due to internal resistance and the fact that the charging voltage is greater than the discharge voltage, the energy returned by the battery upon discharge will be less than the energy used for recharging. Note that because of the internal resistance of the battery, the efficiency will depend on the charging and discharging rate.

Failure Analysis and Processing of Lead Acid Battery (2) – Float Charging is low

Float charging, one working way of lead acid battery pack, is to connect the battery pack and power line in parallel to load circuit. The constant charging voltage is a little higher than its open-circuit voltage and it depends on a small electric charge delivered by power line to compensate self discharge of the storage battery pack so as to keep it long time in the full charge standby mode then not over charge. In the long-time usage of lead acid battery, it might happen that the float charging is low. Why cause that? Maybe the usage is not proper or the quality has something wrong.

The long-time floating charging use or not effective maintenance causes the floating charging voltage low of the single or more batteries. The single battery is lower than 2.20V. Confirmatory analysis showed that new batteries before they go out experienced the capacity, float charging, open-circuit voltage, internal resistance etc matching sets, so the discreteness of new batteries' float charging is small. With the continuous use, the slight difference of the lead acid battery that must exist in manufacturing process will gradually be expanded, such as the difference of open valve voltage, self discharge, and plates. The open valve voltage's difference will cause the different water loss. The rate of sulfuric acid electrolyte of battery that lost more water will go up, and then increase the open-circuit voltage, as well as the float charging voltage. When the total voltage is not changed, it will make the float charging voltage of other batteries in series decrease, and finally lead to the voltage fall behind. The voltage of lead acid battery with large self discharge is easily to fall behind in the long-time float charging process. When the plates happen to soften, the active material dropped out will block the micro holes of the plates, causing the capacity falling behind, and finally the float charging is low. The proper processing method is to start the temperature compensation and equalized charging functions, and setup average charge every three months.

Completely discharging and not getting charged in time, or over discharging, or long-time lack of charging, all can cause the single or more batteries' float charging voltage low. The voltage of single battery is lower than 2.18V. You can use equalized charge for the battery pack. If it can't fix the voltage of the disabled single battery, you'd better recover it separately. If the condition permission, you can use the low current to charge and discharge for 1 to 3 recycles, and then the disabled batteries' voltage and capacity will get a good recovery. But for the serious sulfation battery, you have to replace it.

If the float charging voltage is low or the setting value is lower than 10%, such as lower than 2.0V, then the battery might be micro short circuit or short circuit. You can do the electric discharge validation, because the short-circuit battery can't afford the discharge test. If the discharge voltage goes down fast, or down quickly to 0V, then you have to replace the disabled battery. If it is normal, you can use the above methods to recover it.

Temperature Effects on Lead Acid Batteries

If you don't take care of your lead acid batteries, the service lifespan will be shorter than it should be. So checking and maintaining the lead acid battery on a regular basis is very important. But don't forget one thing that it is the temperature. The temperature will affect the performance of these batteries as well.

Battery capacity (how many amp-hours it can hold) is reduced as temperature goes down, and increased as temperature goes up. This is why your car battery dies on a cold winter morning, even though it worked fine the previous afternoon. If your batteries spend part of the year shivering in the cold, the reduced capacity has to be taken into account when sizing the system batteries. The standard rating for batteries is at room temperature - 25 degrees C (about 77 F). At approximately -22 degrees F (-27 C), battery AH capacity drops to 50%. At freezing, capacity is reduced by 20%. Capacity is increased at higher temperatures - at 122 degrees F, battery capacity would be about 12% higher.

Battery charging voltage also changes with temperature. It will vary from about 2.74 volts per cell (16.4 volts) at -40 C to 2.3 volts per cell (13.8 volts) at 50 C. This is why you should have temperature compensation on your charger or charge control if your batteries are outside and/or subject to wide temperature variations. Some charge controls have temperature compensation built in (such as Morningstar) - this works fine if the controller is subject to the same temperatures as the batteries. However, if your batteries are outside, and the controller is inside, it does not work that well. Adding another complication is that large battery banks make up a large thermal mass.

Thermal mass means that because they have so much mass, they will change internal temperature much slower than the surrounding air temperature. A large insulated battery bank may vary as little as 10 degrees over 24 hours internally, even though the air temperature varies from 20 to 70 degrees. For this reason, external (add-on) temperature sensors should be attached to one of the POSITIVE plate terminals, and bundled up a little with some type of insulation on the terminal. The sensor will then read very close to the actual internal battery temperature.

Even though battery capacity at high temperatures is higher, battery life is shortened. Battery capacity is reduced by 50% at -22 degrees F - but battery LIFE increases by about 60%. Battery life is reduced at higher temperatures - for every 15 degrees F over 77, battery life is cut in half. This holds true for ANY type of Lead-Acid battery, whether sealed, gelled, AGM, industrial or whatever. This is actually not as bad as it seems, as the battery will tend to average out the good and bad times. Click on the small graph to see a full size chart of temperature vs capacity.

One last note on temperatures - in some places that have extremely cold or hot conditions, batteries may be sold locally that are NOT standard electrolyte (acid) strengths. The electrolyte may be stronger (for cold) or weaker (for very hot) climates. In such cases, the specific gravity and the voltages may vary from what we show.
