Lead acid battery problems in the operation of backup power

1. The life of lead acid battery can't meet the design demand.

As a matter of fact, lead acid battery would be serious bad after three years, and few can be used more than five years. That's because consumers don't use those lead acid batteries properly and never maintain it. Plus, they can't find the bad cells timely, so it causes the battery discard as useless.

2. Don't know clearly the operational aspect and performance of lead acid battery.

If there are behindhand cells in the battery pack, you can reduce the differences through a certain depth of discharging and cycle charging. But due to lack of good management and few understanding of internal performance parameters, such as internal resistance and the current surplus capacity, you can not take relative measures because you are unable to know it clearly.

3. As for single cell, the reliability of charging mechanism needs to be perfect.

Since the charging mechanism of domestic DC system is not very perfect, there is voltage drift when in use actually and the lead acid battery was in the floating charge condition in a long time. If the voltage is not the normal value, it will cause the battery over discharge or less charge, which has a big influence on the performance of lead acid batteries.

4. Single cell has an imbalance.

At present, lead acid batteries are consisted of lots of single cells. There are big differences among single cells, such as internal resistance, charging voltage etc, special in the floating charging condition. If there is a behindhand cell that is not full charged and you can't discover and deal with it, it will be worse. Again and again, the imbalance is serious, then cause the behindhand cell out of service. Finally it make the battery pack lose its capacity in advance.

5. Lack of good administering and monitoring.

If there are no administering and monitoring, the lead acid battery maintenance will be weaker, special its operational aspect and performance. A mass of maintenance and administration jobs are required to be done by people and the data needs the professional to clear up and analyze.

6. The end of lead acid battery's life can be known in advance and battery replacement is lack of scientific basis.

We always hope we can foreknown when it is the end of the battery, then we can replace it timely. But now there is no way to clearly know that. In fact, we always judge it is the end of its life when the discharging capacity is lower than the minimum requirement.

A Guide to Flooded Lead Acid Battery

Before we talk about the common usage, firstly we should define what flooded lead acid battery is. Lead Acid Batteries are the eldest of the modern batteries. These batteries were first invented in the late 1800s, and have evolved from the wooden box models of yesteryear to the sleek plastic boxed batteries we purchase today. Based on lead plates, and a sulfuric acid solution, the chemistry has proven over time to be stable, reliable, and fairly safe. VRLA, or valve regulated lead acid batteries, are usually flooded batteries, and the venting is there to handle the generated dangerous explosive gases, hydrogen and oxygen.

Flooded Lead Acid Batteries are standard equipment on many manufacturer boats, yachts, and watercraft. Both AGM and Flooded lead acid batteries are amperage tolerant. AGM and Flooded Lead Acid Batteries are designed to push heavy amperage loads without detrimental effects to the battery. Both AGM and flooded batteries are able to be charged with high output alternators on those motors. These standards and the battery's ability to cope in this environment make either a solid choice over a GEL battery.

Flooded lead acid batteries have been around longest, used the longest in solar and wind electric systems. That's why they are still used in the majority of wind/solar energy systems. The price performance value is because flooded lead acid batteries have the longest life and the least cost per amp-hour of any of the choices. However, they require regular maintenance in the form of watering, equalizing charges and keeping the top and terminals clean.

A flooded lead acid battery is a conventional, unsealed battery that is commonly found in many vehicles. These batteries have caps on the top which can be removed in order to check and replenish the electrolyte level if necessary. Like all batteries, a flooded battery may drain or die from time to time. When this happens, it requires recharging as soon as possible. The longer you allow it to remain discharged, the greater the likelihood for the battery to sulfate, or degrade. Sulfation will eventually ruin the battery. Good maintenance will improve system performance and greatly reduce battery bank replacement costs.

Lead Acid Battery Over-Discharging Preventive Measures

It is not able to completely avoid the self discharge of lead acid battery, but we can take some preventive measures to prevent the battery from over discharge, and make the discharge rate in the normal range. There are eight common preventive measures as following:

1. Often keep the lead acid battery plate clean.

2. Note that the connection between the wire and clip should be fastness, and don't occur the looseness and short-circuit etc phenomenon.

3. Keep the electrolyte with appropriate density. At other times, you should add the distilled water, and don't use other water that includes mineral substance. When liquid level is low, you should add distilled water in time, in case that the density of electrolyte increases for lack of water.

4. Don't continually start the engine for long time. The time of starting doesn't exceed 5 seconds every time. The spacing interval of twice starting should be more than 2 minutes. This will avoid the lead acid battery over discharge because of the large current, which makes the distilled water of electrolyte generate a large evaporation, and then it will burn the plates for the too large electrolyte density. The ventilated holes of lead acid battery cover should be unblocked.

5. Proper store the battery that is not in use. In the summer, it can be put in the room with good ventilation, dry, nice and cool, far away from the chemistry items. Do charge it every month to make the electrolyte density equality, and the liquid level not low.

6. Prevent the sewage from entering the inside of lead acid battery from the cover or air vent when washing the battery.

7. In time recondition or replace the plates when it is damaged.

8. Get rid of the rest of liquid when changing the electrolyte of lead acid battery.

Key Influence of Lead Acid Battery

Most lead acid batteries are constructed with the positive electrode (the anode) made form a lead-antimony alloy with lead oxide pressed into it, although batteries designed for maximum life use a lead-calcium alloy. The negative electrode (the cathode) is made from pure lead and both electrodes are immersed in sulphuric acid.

When the battery is discharged water is produced, diluting the acid and reducing its specific gravity. On charging sulphuric acid is produced and the specific gravity of the electrolyte increases. The specific gravity can be measured using a hydrometer and will have a value of about 1.250 for a charged cell and 1.17 for a discharged cell, although these values will vary depending on the make of battery. The specific gravity also depends on the battery temperature and the above values or for battery at 15℃。

If lead acid batteries are over discharged or left standing in the discharged state for prolonged periods hardened lead sulphate coats the electrodes and will not be removed during recharging. Such build-ups reduce the efficiency and life of batteries. Over charging can cause electrolyte to escape as gases.

The capacity of lead acid battery is very dependent on the temperature at which the battery is operating. The capacity is normally quoted for a temperature of 25℃, however, the capacity will reduce by about 50% at -25℃ and will increase to about 10% at 45℃。Due to internal resistance and the fact that the charging voltage is greater than the discharge voltage, the energy returned by the battery upon discharge will be less than the energy used for recharging. Note that because of the internal resistance of the battery, the efficiency will depend on the charging and discharging rate.

Failure Analysis and Processing of Lead Acid Battery (2) – Float Charging is low

Float charging, one working way of lead acid battery pack, is to connect the battery pack and power line in parallel to load circuit. The constant charging voltage is a little higher than its open-circuit voltage and it depends on a small electric charge delivered by power line to compensate self discharge of the storage battery pack so as to keep it long time in the full charge standby mode then not over charge. In the long-time usage of lead acid battery, it might happen that the float charging is low. Why cause that? Maybe the usage is not proper or the quality has something wrong.

The long-time floating charging use or not effective maintenance causes the floating charging voltage low of the single or more batteries. The single battery is lower than 2.20V. Confirmatory analysis showed that new batteries before they go out experienced the capacity, float charging, open-circuit voltage, internal resistance etc matching sets, so the discreteness of new batteries' float charging is small. With the continuous use, the slight difference of the lead acid battery that must exist in manufacturing process will gradually be expanded, such as the difference of open valve voltage, self discharge, and plates. The open valve voltage's difference will cause the different water loss. The rate of sulfuric acid electrolyte of battery that lost more water will go up, and then increase the open-circuit voltage, as well as the float charging voltage. When the total voltage is not changed, it will make the float charging voltage of other batteries in series decrease, and finally lead to the voltage fall behind. The voltage of lead acid battery with large self discharge is easily to fall behind in the long-time float charging process. When the plates happen to soften, the active material dropped out will block the micro holes of the plates, causing the capacity falling behind, and finally the float charging is low. The proper processing method is to start the temperature compensation and equalized charging functions, and setup average charge every three months.

Completely discharging and not getting charged in time, or over discharging, or long-time lack of charging, all can cause the single or more batteries' float charging voltage low. The voltage of single battery is lower than 2.18V. You can use equalized charge for the battery pack. If it can't fix the voltage of the disabled single battery, you'd better recover it separately. If the condition permission, you can use the low current to charge and discharge for 1 to 3 recycles, and then the disabled batteries' voltage and capacity will get a good recovery. But for the serious sulfation battery, you have to replace it.

If the float charging voltage is low or the setting value is lower than 10%, such as lower than 2.0V, then the battery might be micro short circuit or short circuit. You can do the electric discharge validation, because the short-circuit battery can't afford the discharge test. If the discharge voltage goes down fast, or down quickly to 0V, then you have to replace the disabled battery. If it is normal, you can use the above methods to recover it.

Temperature Effects on Lead Acid Batteries

If you don't take care of your lead acid batteries, the service lifespan will be shorter than it should be. So checking and maintaining the lead acid battery on a regular basis is very important. But don't forget one thing that it is the temperature. The temperature will affect the performance of these batteries as well.

Battery capacity (how many amp-hours it can hold) is reduced as temperature goes down, and increased as temperature goes up. This is why your car battery dies on a cold winter morning, even though it worked fine the previous afternoon. If your batteries spend part of the year shivering in the cold, the reduced capacity has to be taken into account when sizing the system batteries. The standard rating for batteries is at room temperature - 25 degrees C (about 77 F). At approximately -22 degrees F (-27 C), battery AH capacity drops to 50%. At freezing, capacity is reduced by 20%. Capacity is increased at higher temperatures - at 122 degrees F, battery capacity would be about 12% higher.

Battery charging voltage also changes with temperature. It will vary from about 2.74 volts per cell (16.4 volts) at -40 C to 2.3 volts per cell (13.8 volts) at 50 C. This is why you should have temperature compensation on your charger or charge control if your batteries are outside and/or subject to wide temperature variations. Some charge controls have temperature compensation built in (such as Morningstar) - this works fine if the controller is subject to the same temperatures as the batteries. However, if your batteries are outside, and the controller is inside, it does not work that well. Adding another complication is that large battery banks make up a large thermal mass.

Thermal mass means that because they have so much mass, they will change internal temperature much slower than the surrounding air temperature. A large insulated battery bank may vary as little as 10 degrees over 24 hours internally, even though the air temperature varies from 20 to 70 degrees. For this reason, external (add-on) temperature sensors should be attached to one of the POSITIVE plate terminals, and bundled up a little with some type of insulation on the terminal. The sensor will then read very close to the actual internal battery temperature.

Even though battery capacity at high temperatures is higher, battery life is shortened. Battery capacity is reduced by 50% at -22 degrees F - but battery LIFE increases by about 60%. Battery life is reduced at higher temperatures - for every 15 degrees F over 77, battery life is cut in half. This holds true for ANY type of Lead-Acid battery, whether sealed, gelled, AGM, industrial or whatever. This is actually not as bad as it seems, as the battery will tend to average out the good and bad times. Click on the small graph to see a full size chart of temperature vs capacity.

One last note on temperatures - in some places that have extremely cold or hot conditions, batteries may be sold locally that are NOT standard electrolyte (acid) strengths. The electrolyte may be stronger (for cold) or weaker (for very hot) climates. In such cases, the specific gravity and the voltages may vary from what we show.

From Another Way To Know Lead Acid Battery

Lead acid battery - having a high power density combined with reliability and relatively low cost, these batteries are a variety of practical applications. Its popularity and wide scale production of lead-acid batteries are required starting battery. In this area of their monopoly position is stable. The traditional areas of lead-acid batteries in the past decade added nuclear power plants, submerged underwater vehicles, household electrical appliances and other consumers.

The wet cell or lead-acid battery will be the oldest way of the rechargeable battery which is still in today's use. This battery has a liquid found in an unsealed container that will require battery being saved in an upright position. The spot by which it really is used should be well-ventilated so they won't result in the ventilated, hydrogen gas to produce its explosive qualities.

Lead acid battery is quite heavy, although its cost to manufacture is low along with the high surge content levels ensure it is a widely used battery in places where how heavy it is and handling ease aren't from a concern. The most typical kind of a lead-acid battery could be the car battery. A gel battery is known to be a costly lead-acid battery type, containing a semi-solid electrolyte that is used to avoid spillage. The portable types are thought to be dry cells.

Lead acid battery does however create a major impact on the environment. The only reason being that they were hard to dispose off, because the chemicals they contained harmed the environment which indirectly leads to humans getting affected. Being cheap and delivering better power compared to other sources increased the number of sales which lead to a huge piles of batteries being discarded improperly, ending up in landfills. The problem with lead acid batteries lies within them, in the form of a very toxic lead which even in tiny amounts over long term exposure deteriorates human health to a large extent. Another issue also arises from lead mining and manufacturing which raises a lot of environmental concerns. A new found way of dealing with the issue of lead contamination, was brought about by recycling of batteries. Today battery recycling has been gaining importance for manufacturers in terms of economic feasibility. If you want to know more about lead acid battery, please visit https://www.leoch.com

Some General Information about Lead Acid Battery

Invented in 1859 by French physicist Gaston Plant, lead acid battery is the oldest type of rechargeable battery. Despite having the second lowest energy-to-weight ratio (next to the nickel-iron battery) and a correspondingly low energy-to-volume ratio, their ability to supply high surge currents means that the cells maintain a relatively large power-to-weight ratio. These features, along with their low cost, make them attractive for use in motor vehicles to provide the high current required by automobile starter motors.

A lead acid battery is an electrical storage device that uses a reversible chemical reaction to store energy. It uses a combination of lead plates or grids and an electrolyte consisting of a diluted sulphuric acid to convert lectrical energy into potential chemical energy and back again. The electrolyte of lead-acid batteries is hazardous to your health and may produce burns and other permanent damage if you come into contact with it!

Lead-acid battery industry, the country's environmental shock wave continues, the industry did not expect is that not only environmental standards by the policy impact of small businesses, some large enterprises also was ordered to suspend production for rectification, lead-acid battery industry is almost across the board suffer. Requirements for protection from the current situation appears too high is a factor, China Battery Industry Association, vice president of full-time Wang Jing Zhong said that if by some provinces in the implementation of the 500-meter distance protection requirements, very few companies

In general, lead acid battery is damaged in terms of capacity and service life if discharged below the recommended cut-off voltages. It is widely recognized that the lead calcium alloy grid batteries are susceptible to over discharge damage. For example, if a lead acid battery was discharged to zero (0) volts, and left standing in either open circuit or on load for a long period of time, severe sulphation would occur, raising the internal resistance of the battery to an abnormally high level. In such an extreme case, the battery would not accept charge. Although over discharging IBT lead acid batteries is not recommended, they have been designed to withstand small levels of over discharge, provided that the battery is not left in a discharged state for a long period of time. It is necessary to avoid the over discharge situation as much as possible. To prevent this from happening, for some applications, it may be possible to incorporate a low voltage alarm and cut off circuit.

How to clearly define AGM batteries?

AGM Batteries, one of VRLA battery, are comprised of lead plates, Advanced Glass Mat, and acid, inside the battery case. Each plate is wrapped in a separator to avoid short circuits, then a piece of glass matting is put on each side of the plate, then another plate is added, and the AGM matting is installed again. The plates, mats, and separators are installed into the battery by hand, soldered together, then flooded with acid. Nearly all AGM batteries are recombinant, meaning they can recombine 99% of the oxygen as well as hydrogen. There is nearly no water is loss.

The primary step is to understand the battery classification structure and where AGM batteries fit into it all VRLA batteries are the type of battery of which AGM batteries are a sub-class The VRLA battery is a category of minimal maintenance lead-acid rechargeable batteries, and its acronym stands for valve-regulated lead-acid battery Due to their construction, VRLA batteries don't require water to be put into the cells on a regular basis The technology behind these batteries has been refined over time, as these specific types of batteries have been commercially available now for about a century

Besides, the charging voltages are the similar as for other lead-acid batteries. Even below severe from charge conditions, hydrogen emission is below the 4% such as for aircraft as well as enclosed spaces. The low self-discharge of 1-3% per month admits long time storage before recharging. The AGM costs 2 times that of the flooded version of the similar capacity. Because of durability, German high performance cars use AGM batteries in favor of the flooded type.

Advantages

•     Inexpensive as well as simple to manufacture.

•     Mature, reliable as well as well-understood technology – overce utilized correctly, lead-acid is durable as well as provides dependable service.

•     The self-discharge is between the lowest of rechargeable battery cognitive systems.

•     Capable of high discharge rates.

Limitations

•     Low energy density – poor weight-to-energy ratio limits use to stationary as well as wheeled applications.

•     Cannot be stored in a discharged condition – the cell voltage should never drop below 2.10V.

•     Allows overly a limited number of complete discharge cycles – well suited as for standby applications that require overly occasional deep discharges.

•     Lead content as well as electrolyte induce the Toshiba pa3594u-1brs battery environmentally unfriendly.

•     Transportation restrictions over flooded lead acid – there are environmental concerns concerning spillage.

•     Thermal runaway can occur whenever improperly charged.

Comparing to gel battery, AGM Battery will always beat a GEL battery for marine applications. AGM batteries are generally far more efficient than are flooded lead acid batteries. This is important when determining the cost to charge and discharge the batteries. Generally an AGM battery will give you between 80-90% of the power pushed into the battery, back. On the other hand, flooded lead acid batteries typically have efficiencies in the 40-60% range. The bottom lines here are time and money. Basically you spend more to charge a flooded battery than you do an AGM. This translates to money as generators eat gas, alternators rob horsepower from the engine, and battery chargers eat kilowatts. The real tragedy is that you get less of that power back from the flooded battery than you do with an AGM battery.

In simply terms, AGM Batteries are safer than GEL or Flooded Batteries - No Acid Leaks, no explosions. AGM Batteries are more efficient than either Flooded or GEL battery. AGM Batteries are able to be charged or discharged faster than Flooded Batteries (due to low internal resistance). AGM Batteries are the same voltage as their flooded cousins - allows for plug and play.

Lithium-ion Batteries are likely to replace lead acid battery

China's environmental ministry ordered tight controls of lead acid battery units and recyclers following reports of poisoning incidents in Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces. Battery production accounts for about 70 percent of China's domestic lead consumption, estimated at about 4.1 million tons in 2011. The industry has repeatedly been the subject of environmental concerns in recent years. So some R&D teams imagine that Lithium-ion batteries are likely to replace lead acid battery.

Alternatives to short lived, toxic lead acid traction batteries, with their indifferent performance, have been sought for over 100 years. Now both lithium-ion batteries and super capacitors are near to replacing lead acid traction batteries in the many traction applications where they are still used

Lead acid batteries are the favorites for light commercial vehicles, golf cars, surface boats, material handling vehicles such as forklifts, airport ground support equipment GSE, e-bikes and mobility vehicles for the disabled. Actually, these vehicles do not form a coherent group when it comes to their needs for traction energy storage. It is true that they are all tolerant of limited range. People still buy them even when their range is only 5-20 miles. However, the weight of the lead acid battery in a golf car, surface boat, GSE and large mobility vehicle keeps the centre of gravity low so they do not fall over: with land vehicles the weight can also assist grip on the road.

Physically, it will be possible to have drop in replacement lithium-ion batteries for mobility vehicles but they will then be unstable in most cases and a broader wheelbase or other stabilisation may be needed. The exceptions will be electric wheelchairs and those very lightweight folding or dismantling 3 and 4 wheel mobility scooters that fit in even small cars. The others will need redesign, say with a wider wheelbase or steel or, ironically, lead weighting. After all, the obese are often perched high on these mobile seats. Indeed standardised lead acid replacements have arrived. Market-leading lithium ion and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) product is rated at 24 volts 9.6 Ah, making it a replacement for buyers of lead-acid seeking a lighter, stronger, more robust solution allowing longer run times. It weighs 5.5 pounds (2.5kg) and the sales pitch points out that it does not contain expensive and hazardous heavy metals or dangerous chemicals typical of other chemistries, making it a more environmentally benign battery. Results show that, when used properly, the batteries charge faster and last three to five times longer than conventional batteries, and hold their charge even after being in storage for long periods of time.

If the burgeoning lithium-ion scene is not enough for the lead acid people to worry about they should consider super capacitors, referred to as ultra capacitors by those using them across electric batteries in buses. Super capacitors help with fast charge and discharge of lithium-ion batteries in particular but they have not stored enough energy per unit of volume or weight, or even stored it long enough, to impinge on traction batteries themselves.

However, supercapacitors have been rapidly improving. They tend to have no toxic materials or elements subject to price hikes such as the cobalt in most lithium-ion traction batteries used today and double the life of lithium-ion batteries and treble the life of lead acid battery is typical. Their previously rapid self discharge and poor energy density have been improving. Many new applications open up every step of the way such as mobile phone cameras with long distance flash.

Can Sealed Lead Acid Convert to Flooded Lead Acid Battery?

I have a sealed lead acid battery of 7.5 Ah from my computer UPS. It shows diminished performance but charges to 13.2 volts. I think the liquid inside it has evaporated. I am thinking of converting it to a flooded lead acid battery and use it for my emergency lantern. Can I convert the sealed lead acid battery to a flooded one by pouring battery acid in it? Then I could maintain it by adding water from time to time. Is there any risk? Will the battery work? I have an uncertified source to charge at 17 volts 1 amp which is maintained at 14.6 volts when connected to battery.

Someone said, "You can. The caution is when you remove the vents, to be sure to plug them to protect from spills. The innards of a SLA are much like a standard LA battery. The fill holes are plugged with rupture vents. You CAN remove the vents and fill the battery with water. You shouldn't have to add acid, just water. Use your desulfinator +charger to get the sulfates re-constituted into the electrolyte."

Another person said that I can't convert it if it's a gel cell. He told me that first check the manufacturer's datasheet to make sure that it is an SLA and not a gel cell.

Then I told him that it's definitely a sealed Lead Acid battery. if I just pour water to fill the cells then it would be too dilute because the is just enough acid to make it work in dry condition, so I think I should add acid so I make it to work as flooded lead acid battery.

One of my friends said, "If you change the specific gravity of the battery, it won't work properly. Hard to say how much water may have evaporated. You could try adding just enough distilled water to cover the plates, and then a little acid. Charge the cell. Keep reading the specific gravity while you are desulphating it. If the specific gravity at some point exceeds about 1.26, you will need to add more distilled water.
If you simply add acid, you may wind up with electrolyte that is much too high in specific gravity after the lead sulphate has been dissolved back into the solution. Monitoring the specific gravity is really the only way you can get an idea of where you are, and where you need to go."

One net friend said with a smile, "Adding acid is VERY rare. I work with hard used LA batteries every day, and I have never had to add acid in the course of standard use. If you spilled a new battery, maybe you can. But if the water evaporated, the electrolyte would become very acidic and become sulfate rather quickly. Add distilled water and put on charge."

Everyone had their own opinion, and finally I found it is so difficult to do that. It didn't mean that I would give up. Just go for some expert guide to finish the hard work. I believed that I would convert the sealed lead acid to flooded lead acid battery at last.
