Take Care of Your Li-On Battery

Lithium-Ion batteries have a finite life; they slowly degrade from the day they are first made. The life of the battery will depend upon how you charge and discharge the battery and the temperature at which the battery is kept. A manufacturer will rate a Notebook battery to the point where it holds 50% of its original capacity. At this point you should consider replacing the battery.

  The energy is stored in these batteries through the movement of lithium ions. Lithium is the third lightest element, giving a substantial saving in weight compared to batteries using much heavier metals. However, the bulk of the electrodes are effectively "housing" for the ions and add weight, and in addition "dead weight" from the electrolyte, current collectors, casing, electronics and conductivity additives reduce the charge per unit mass to little more than that of other rechargeable batteries. The forte of the Li-ion chemistry is the high open circuit voltage in comparison to aqueous batteries (such as lead acid, nickel metal hybride and nickel cadmium).

  Transport lithium batteries with care. Because of the potential for short circuit and rapid discharge causing explosion, the air transportation of lithium batteries is strictly regulated. Any battery not installed in an electronic device may not be transported in either checked or carry-on luggage.

  Remember that the battery half-lifeis rated for a certain total number of charge/discharge cycles (see your User Manual or Quick Start Guide for the rating). For example, a battery that is rated for 3 hours and 500 charge/discharge cycles will still be considered as within specification, even if it only lasts for 1 hour 45 minutes after 500 charge/discharge cycles.

  Always ensure the battery is recharged as soon as possible after it becomes fully discharged. A battery will be permanently damaged if left for an extended length of time in a fully discharged state.

  Heat is the worst enemy of a battery. Allow plenty of air to circulate around the Notebook/Tablet PC, so that the battery is kept as cool as possible when charging and also when in use. If provided, use the integrated 'legs' under the Notebook to raise the notebook and improve air circulation.

  Do Not - Expose the battery to excessive heat or cold (i.e. outside the range of 10-35 degrees Centigrade ambient).

Do Not - Store the battery in a fully charged state (store batteries with about 50% charge).

 Do Not - Allow a nearly flat battery to be unused for more than a month or so. The battery will slowly discharge until it becomes fully discharged and this will permanently damage the battery cells.

How to get more Battery Time from your Digital Camera Battery

  When it comes to power consumption not all digital camera features are equal. Some of the digital camera greatest features are high energy consumers.   Turn off the LCD and use the viewfinder: Use the optical viewfinder instead of the LCD for composing your photos. Using the camera menus disable the LCD by turning it off. Since the LCD consumes a lot of energy every time you are using it to take a photo or to look at your objects and compose a photo you are wasting energy. Only use the LCD when you must for example when taking an overhead photo when the optical viewfinder is not usable.

  Do not use continuous focus when not necessary: Every time your camera focuses it consumer's energy. The motors that move the optical components in order to focus consume a lot of energy. You can not avoid focusing of course but you can avoid focusing that is not necessary. For example your digital camera can be set to continuous or single focus. For moving objects such as in sport events continuous focus is used so your can stay focused on the object until you are ready to take the photo. In those cases as long as you press the shutter button half way down the camera will continue to focusing on the object. To save energy minimize that time to the minimum necessary. For example if you plan to shoot a photo of a runner at point A only presses the shutter when he gets close to that point. Holding the shutter button down and following the runner for a longer time than needed to capture him at point A wastes a lot of energy .  

  Carry another battery: Two batteries have twice the energy as one. Carry an extra battery if you are planning for a long shooting session or if you are not sure how many photos you will shoot and how long you will be away from your charger. Some photographers always carry an extra battery with them - batteries are very small and light and carrying an extra one is really not a burden. One thing to remember when carrying an extra battery is to always make sure that you are carrying an extra battery that is fully charged there is no use in carrying an empty battery. Batteries tend to lose their charge even if they are not used so if you are carrying an extra battery for a few days or more remember to recharge it even if you did not use it.

Maximize Your Laptop Battery

If you take the time to make a few adjustments to your laptop, while keeping battery conservation at the forefront of your mind, you can effectively extend the power of the battery's life and, until you can plug in your computer, avoid losing the use of it.

 Click on low-power settings, such as "sleep," "standby" or "suspend" when you close your computer, but don't want to completely shut it down. This works two-fold. It gives you the opportunity to resume your work quickly while saving power. "Hibernate" uses less power than "sleep." It shuts your computer down and saves everything to the hard drive. When you resume power, your desktop is exactly as you left it, saving you time.

  Remove any USB devices or PC cards you don't need to conserve battery power. If your computer uses a wireless card, remove it when you don't need the connection. Disable any devices, via your computer's device manager, that you aren't using, such as your modem, network card or DVD/CD-ROM drive.

  Dim the screen on your laptop. Check the keyboard for function keys that will allow you to do so, or consult your user's manual. A dim screen uses less battery power than a bright one. Set your computer screen to go blank after a certain period of time, such as five minutes of inactivity. If you are interrupted while working for longer than the period of time you select, the blank screen will appear and save power.

 Prioritise your work; if you don't have to multi task don't. Consider switching off the autosave functions in MS Word or other applications. They are great but as they keep saving at regular intervals, they make your hard disk work harder, eating up battery power. That said, we should add a word of warning: when your battery is low switch autosave back on so you don't lose work if the computer unexpectedly switches off when the battery goes flat.

Unplug unnecessary devices such as additional speakers, or things like DVD and hard disks that take power via USB from the laptop. Consider changing your screen resolution and brightness. The brighter the screen appears, the more electricity it is consuming. Work from your hard disk rather than the CD or DVD drive. On some laptops, you can even remove the optical drive.

Replacing the Lithium Ion Battery

Lithium-ion batteries are quite common to be used as laptop battery. They are one of the most popular types of rechargeable battery for portable gadget, like laptop with one of the best energy densities, no memory effect, and a slow loss of charge when not in use. Beyond consumer electronics, the lithium-ion battery is also growing in popularity for military, electric vehicle, and aerospace applications. Laptop lithium-ion batteries, like all rechargeable battery packs, lose their charging capacity over time. Keeping Camcorder Battery in Charge

Charge your camcorder before leaving for your destination. Check the battery level in advance to make sure that the battery charge is at a 100 percent. If you do not use the camcorder for a long time, the battery can lose its charge. To preserve the battery life, it is best to remove the battery from the camcorder before storing it.

  Use the viewfinder on the camcorder instead of using the LCD screen. Using the LCD screen can shorten the amount of life that you can get out of your battery. Using the viewfinder may be a bit cumbersome, but it will allow you more time to video.

  Minimize the use of some of the features on your camcorder when making a video. This will make your camcorder battery keep the charge longer. Some features such as zooming in and out can decrease the battery charge.

  Place the battery pack into the battery pack attachment platform and push the battery into place. The battery attachment platform is located in the area that the LCD covers when it's closed. When you hear a clicking sound, the battery is in place.

  Plug the AC adapter into the wall and allow the camcorder to charge. When the indicator light--located to the right of the power button--turns green, your camcorder is fully charged.

  Connect the AC power adapter into either a wall outlet or an available outlet in a surge protector. Connect the other end of the power adapter cord into the "DC in" jack on your Samsung camcorder. The charging indicator will begin to blink. The indicator is located above the "DC In" jack.

  Disconnect the camcorder from the AC power adapter once the charging indicator light stops blinking and stays on. This means that the camcorder is at or very near a 100 percent charge. Do not disconnect the battery pack; otherwise your camcorder will not turn on or operate.

  Allow the battery to charge. While the phone is charging, the battery icon will change from a battery with one bar, to a battery with two bars, to a battery with three bars and then start all over. When the battery is fully charged, the battery icon will display a battery with three bars. Once this is displayed, unplug the adapter from the electrical outlet and from the phone.

  Check to make sure the battery's connections are clean and good. If the connections are dirty, clean the connections by pouring soda pop over top the terminals and using steel wool or emery cloth to remove any corrosion that has built up and re-tighten the terminals. Next, follow the negative cable (black) from the battery to the bike's ground. Check this connection and if you are suspect, remove and clean up the ground with emery cloth and tighten. Next, check the battery for a sticker that says when the battery was first installed. The sticker will have a letter and a number. The letter corresponds to the month (A = January, B= February and so on) and the number is the year. If the battery is over five years old and/or the bike has been sitting for a while it's probably time to replace it but it doesn't hurt to try and resuscitate the battery. Start by putting a voltmeter on the terminals to read current voltage. A properly charged battery will have 12.6 volts or above. If your battery falls below this threshold it's time to recharge the battery.
