IBM GARS: Looking beyond the Horizons!

IBM GARS: Looking beyond the Horizons!

IBM has had a large ARS operation in Endicott, New York, and Raleigh, North Carolina, that reconditions or deconstructs old electronics equipment for its customers. However, this has become a global phenomenon now. In 2008, IBM Global Asset Recovery Services was recognized by the IT analyst firm IDC as one of the first recipients of its Green Recycling and Asset Disposal for the Enterprise (G.R.A.D.E.) certification. IBM's Global Asset Recovery

Services (GARS), with many years of experience of managing the IT assets of IBM on a colossal scale, fully understands these needs and helps in dealing with its disposal in a much more affordable, manageable and flexible manner. Running under the tutelage of IBM Global

Financing (which delivers financial services to 125,000 customers in more than 55 countries), GARS offers customers a financial opportunity with several attractive options. It offers full manufacturing capabilities, broad network of distribution channel and web-based services. It essentially offers Objective Optimal Residual Value and asset value recovery.

John Richards, Director, Global Asset Recovery Services, IBM, says, "GARS is a good news for those concerned with the environment and at the same time for those who believe in obtaining optimum value for money on selling a used product. It is also an apt method to supply as per demand after refurbishing. Different users' requirement is different and we serve this demand in a cost-effective manner. In India, IBM is planning huge investment for setting up a plant for the same. Many governments have prohibited the disposal of electronics in landfills. So if you have been holding back old equipment out of fear, or for any other reasons, it is time to take notice of IBM's deconstructive capabilities. While GARS' worldwide landfill and incineration rate was YE 2008, a more in-depth analysis revealed that for the past three years, GARS' major demanufacturing locations recycled over 90 per cent of the product and material processed (weight) and less than 2/10 of a percentage was land-filled.

IBM accelerates Social Business Initiative with New Software

IBM accelerates Social Business Initiative with New Software

IBM has announced an expansion of its software portfolio to help organizations embrace the power of social business. As part of news IBM is delivering IBM Connections, the social networking platform with real-time compliance capabilities.

The new IBM Connections software allows organizations to track and trace data on the fly throughout their organizations. This information can be analyzed and is discoverable in real time using the IBM Connections active compliance service versus waiting until day end for analysis.

The adoption of social software is on the rise and rapidly becoming a vital business tool, enabling organizations to transform virtually every part of their business operations from marketing, customer service and sales, to product development and human resources. The market opportunity for social platforms is expected to grow by a factor of nearly two billion worldwide by 2014, according to IDC.

Organizations, both in regulated industries and those beginning to experiment with social technology, inevitably have questions about security and compliance. A growing challenge for global organizations is the ability to manage risk while harnessing insights from a wide variety of social communities and remaining compliant with their own governance policies, including practices dictated by their regulatory requirements.A growing challenge for global organizations is the ability to manage risk while harnessing insights from a wide variety of social communities and remaining compliant with their own governance policies, including practices dictated by their regulatory requirements.

Gartner recently said that "by the end of 2013, half of all companies will be forced to produce material from social media websites for e-discovery so enterprises need an overall governance strategy for all applications and information". The new IBM Connections 3.01 software uses microblogs, wikis, communities and activities to collaborate with clients, partners and employees. The new IBM Connections 3.01 software uses microblogs, wikis, communities and activities to collaborate with clients, partners and employees.

IBM @ 100: Still Young and Vibrant

Established in the year 1911, IBM has celebrated the 100-year anniversary of its founding on June 16, 2011. To celebrate the milestone, the company today released a book, "Making the World Work Better: The Ideas That Shaped a Century and a Company", debuted a new film "Wild Ducks" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksQrJh7s7N0) and marked the anniversary by ringing the Opening Bell at the New York Stock Exchange.

During its first century, IBM has played a leading role in transforming business, science and society. The company's history can be seen as a succession of key milestones.

Chairman of the Board, President & CEO Samuel J. Palmisano said, "For IBMers, long-term thinking means continually moving to the future, IBM has survived and thrived for 100 years by remaining true to our core values, while being ready to change everything else. This has allowed us to transform technology, business and society through our first century, and we believe it will enable us to achieve even more in our second."

Shankar Annaswamy, Managing Director, IBM India Private Limited, said, "It has been an exciting journey for IBM in India. As we move ahead towards the next century, we will take forward this legacy of innovation and growth and continue to contribute to the economy and society in India."

One of the oldest living IBM alumni, Luis A. Lamassonne, is 105 years old and resides in Miami, Florida. I have faith that IBM will survive for many more years, for another century."

IBM India, as part of the centennial celebrations, will align itself to a unique global initiative wherein IBM employees worldwide will significantly increase their service in their local communities. Over 50 per cent of the employees will pledge a minimum of 8 hours of voluntary service each and work with over 100 NGOs engaged in different community programmes.

Additionally, IBM will provide grants worth US$12 million to support the Celebration of Service globally, with a part of this grant being given in India as well. Some of the major community initiatives will be volunteered by IBMers in India.

"Clients continue to draw benefits from the unmatched RAS features that a UNIX environment offers. In that category, IBM's Power7 clearly packs in twice as much performance and energy efficiency than competitive systems, and our clients across sectors and size are clearly drawing on these benefits. The IDC market ranking results for first quarter 2011 are clear proof of that. It is evident that companies, which invest in real R&D and have a robust product roadmap, stand to win client confidence. Watson is a great example of our commitment to investing in Smarter Computing to solve real-life problems," said Viswanath Ramaswamy, Country Manager - Power Systems, Systems and Technology Group, IBM India/SA.

IIFL engages IBM as Strategic Services Partner

IIFL engages IBM as Strategic Services Partner

IBM has entered into a strategic, 10-year IT outsourcing agreement with India Infoline (IIFL) to transform its IT Infrastructure and establish a direct linkage between business performance and IT costs. The Rs.298-crore agreement will help IIFL deliver a higher level of customer satisfaction, ensure continuous audit readiness, strengthen its IT security framework and compliance while at the same time provide better visibility and control of IT operations.

This collaboration will significantly improve customer experience for IIFL's end-customers by ensuring higher uptime for its broking platform "Traders Terminal", speedier response and resolution of any technology-related issues. The scalable technology deployment will enable IIFL to roll out enhanced functionality in shorter timeframes.

Under this agreement, IBM will take over the complete IT operations of IIFL which will entail managing more than 700 IIFL branches spread across India. The complete IT infrastructure at IIFL consists of more than 450 servers spread across five data centers and nine local server rooms with over 15,000 end-user assets distributed across its branches. It will also include a Wide Area Network that connects all IIFL offices to the corporate offices in Mumbai and the entire application stack that forms the core trading platform along with supporting enterprise applications. IBM will also take over the entire application support for the custom-built application stack, based on an innovative co-managed support model with IIFL's Application Team.

"With technology being the core of financial services business, we need to ensure high availability of predictable IT services in a highly regulated environment. The Indian financial services market is at an inflection point slated for growth where technology is the best enabler for higher penetration. We needed to have a proven partner in this field. IBM came up with an innovative commercial model that will provide a direct connection between business performance and IT costs, while enabling us to scale operations at short notices,"said Sankarson Banerjee, Chief Technology Officer, IIFL Group.

IBM will set up a centralized helpdesk, roll out a pan-India deskside services capability to support users, applications and infrastructure in branches, and deploy service management processes to cover assets, IT security, capacity, network, storage, incident /problem/change, and technology, among others.
