Many people aren't actually aware of the fact that you can cut things with a laser. For example, the technologies involved in steel laser cutting are quite common these days. An application of this set of technologies involves CD "burning". When you record data onto a CD, you're actually cutting and etching micro grooves and pits into the plastic disc. These grooves and pits, they represent bits of information. Literally, we're talking about ones and zeros that can be interpreted by a CD player or a computer. With digital information being recorded this way, you quite easily transfer data from location to location. This is just one application of steel laser cutting that has been in place for decades, but a situation that not everybody realizes exists. There's also the fact that metal laser cutting has been in place for decades as well; the everyday item that comes to mind is rather big: it's an automobile.
Today, mass production is made possible by robotic arms that not only cut sheets of metal out to be used to assemble into the main frame of a car, but these robotic arms fuse and meld pieces together as well. This is the kind of thing that people just aren't aware of, but the effects of which are rather profound. Think of how much more expensive cars would be had this sort of mass production not been possible. Quite easily, the retail costs of some of these cars could jump up as much as 300%. But there would be ramifications for such a scenario at a macroeconomic scale as well. If the kind of steel laser cutting technologies that were involved in punching out pieces of an automobile didn't exist, you really could not even assume that we would have the pieces of steel that form and make up much of what we see in today's large metropolises.
You have to realize that cutting and manipulating steel is so important to the proper functioning of our modern society, that should we (for whatever reason) lose these capabilities, you really would not see a community anywhere near as productive a community as you have today. So, for many, what's encompassed by a lot of what's being offered in terms of steel laser cutting, really begs for much more an appreciation than the task at hand (be that task burning plastic data discs or forging huge buildings). What's at stake is quite simply everything. The cutting of steel in just the right way enables communities in rural areas of developing economies to mill for water; cutting steel allows for the transmission of electricity and data; being able to cut steel shelters us, and even clothes us.
