Getting away on holiday can quickly become an expensive venture. Airfare, hotels, meals and admission fees all add up. There is also the stress of packing, not losing a kid or two at the airport, unpacking on the other hand, navigating a new city and finding a place to eat that caters to everyone's tastes.
Planning a vacation with your own home as "home base" can relieve a lot of stress and be a little easier on the bank account.
When my husband and I lived in Australia we were always caught off guard by two statements the locals made as it came to travel destinations.
- With respect to where we were from: "Oh we've been there it's beautiful!"
- With respect to travelling locally: "Why would you go there it's so lame?"
When we put the two statements together it was obvious that we were just like the locals in Australia in that we took what we had back home for granted just as they did. The fact that they didn't get as excited about a koala clambering out of the trees is similar to us not paying too much attention to the Northern Lights on a winter's night.
Staying home and seeing the beauty in your region through the eyes of a tourist can be an amazing thing. There are likely a ton of parks, shops, boutiques and restaurants that you don't even know exist. Here are some tips on how you can get away this summer, save a bit of money and become familiar with the sights in your own backyard.
Find out if there are any festivals, sporting events or carnivals that will be in your area during the summer. This could be something worth planning your holidays around. Maybe there's a local pool or beach you've been meaning to visit but haven't made the time or might even have thought "how lame".
Pay attention to the span and stamina of everyone in your group. Consider taking a stroller for little ones who may not be able to walk as far. Plan for breaks and include activities that require little energy (picnics, movies, shows etc.) Pushing little ones too hard and too fast will make for a terrible time all around.
No matter how well prepared you are things rarely ever go according to plan. Set your expectations accordingly and remember that you're having this adventure to have fun and spend time with your family. If you've planned to hit the zoo one afternoon but it's raining, don't sweat it, go into your car for a while and enjoy several nice songs with a car audio device.
If one of you is a bit grumpy try not to let one person's mood affect the whole day. Have fun and keep a lighthearted spirit.
